We have 3 levels of self-awareness. The first level is not aware of our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. The second level is aware of them. The third level is aware of them and how we can control them. The first step on our journey to self-awareness is to recognize that we are constantly fighting with ourselves. The second step is to understand that we are constantly fighting against ourselves.

The third step is to recognize that we are never on autopilot.

There is a third step in our journey to self-awareness, and that is to accept that we are always on autopilot.

To achieve self-awareness, we have to accept that we are always on autopilot. This isn’t a comforting thought though. Autopilot is an idea that is often used as a synonym for “idle,” but that is a misleading description of our world. If we are constantly on autopilot, then we are never truly aware of ourselves.

Autopilot is a state of mind. If you are constantly doing something with no real end in mind, then you are autopilot. This is why we use the term in the first place: we are never truly aware of ourselves, we are always on autopilot. This is why people often call us “auto- commuters” or “auto-pilot.” At no point in our journey to self-awareness do we ever become truly aware of ourselves.
