When I was a young child, my family would ride our bikes to the local swimming pool every day after work. It is the only place my family could get away from the stresses of the day, the housework, and the constant yelling at my mom and dad. I would use the pool as a place to focus on my own thoughts and feelings so that I could avoid the constant stress of getting on the bike with my dad and running home for the third time that day.
Today my dad is not the only one running from the house, and you can clearly see the stress that’s been building up in his face as he’s trying to keep up with his son on his bike. But I can’t say I blame him for his frustration. I used to be the same way, but then I started running to the pool to escape all the stresses of the day. My dad is lucky I’m not the same way he is.
My dad lives with my mom and I, and so I’m still learning the ways that we deal with everyday life. For example: I’m not always happy to find that my dad is just as stressed out as I am. I’m trying to learn to cope with everyday stress in ways that are less stressful. I’m also learning that the only way to do this is to make my dad happy.
I have a different take on how to do this. My dad can be a little too stressed out for a lot of our conversations, but he is very understanding. I have found that my dad is happy to be my partner on the road trip, but even that is stressful. Like I always say, I love my dad, but I also love what I do. I don’t have a specific plan, but I’m figuring out how to do it the right way.
