Githyanki names are derived from a handful of sources. Githzerai ancestry, the illithid language, and their own tradition. The most common source is githzerai lineage which can often lead to strange combinations like “Storlak” or “Dardaar” which sound short but sturdy. Illithids have an unusual reaction to this world since they were not born here – all of the children with natural parents (illithids) adopt “Kamil” as a surname because it means “born in exile”. Some of these names include Kamil’s older sister Telzyn who goes by Tela for short; his younger brother Thalmor who goes by Tolar for short; his cousin Keldor who goes by Kel for short.

Githyanki do not have a tradition of naming their children in particular ways, but they often use some kind of word that describes the child’s features or personality to create names like “Dardaar” which means “sharp” and is one possible translation from githzerai. There are also people with Githzerai ancestry who were raised among humans as well such as Storlak’s mother – she was human and never knew her father so he has no idea what her birth name might have been..

For those looking for something more exotic there may be an option closer than you think.

Some Githyanki have taken on the name of their gods and goddesses as a surname or title for themselves, like “Arundil”, which means “Sheltering Fortress” in githzerai. Many take this to mean that they are descended from one of these deities but there is no way to be certain because the race doesn’t keep records – it’s possible that some humans may have been granted with such an honor as well.

Githyanki names can also come from places where they live or visit while adventurers; Dereth was originally just visiting her relatives when she became involved in adventuring so any time we see her mentioned after meeting Jaheira she has either traveled
