The impulse-sensitivity principle states that when we feel that something is very much important, or really something that needs to happen, we are more likely to be engaged in it. This means that if someone is looking for a restaurant, but they are in a hurry, they will probably go to the one that is closest to them. This behavior is called “impulse-driven”.
This principle is not only very applicable to our normal daily life, it’s also important to some of our most exciting and important jobs. When I was an engineer I did my best to make myself do all of my best work if I could, but without a lot of impulse-sensitivity I really wouldn’t have been able to hit the ground running when I had a deadline. In this case, it really was an opportunity to do some good work in a very important area of the company.

I am so lucky to have the opportunity to get up every single morning and to get my homework done. I usually can’t sleep very well, so it is very important that I do my homework. There are a lot of people that will have their own agendas and will try to push you around, and if you don’t have an agenda, things will not go as you plan.
When you’re working with a company that is very unique and incredibly difficult to manage, you will probably see a lot of people who don’t understand you and how to manage your team. I know that you are going to get a lot of comments from people who are trying to convince you to put down those things and get over it. But what you need to do is make sure that you understand what you are doing. If you don’t, you will get that same response.
I’m sure that many people have this thought-experiment in their mind- “Why do I need to be so careful with my impulses? I just feel like I’m always doing something stupid.” I think that is the type of impulse control that needs to be practiced. I really think that there are people out there who need to work on their impulse control.
Like you, I think that not getting over it is a good and very important thing. It’s also important to know what you are doing. It can be a good idea to give yourself a few days and to get yourself into the right mindset (which, in the case of impulse si unit, means not being too lazy about it).
